Pathology Inc. Consensus Conference
August 15th, 2006

Fascinoma of the Day #1: A soft tissue mass in the the thigh of a 15 year old girl.

Dr. Alessandro DeVito presented an example of a composite hemangioendothelioma (see figures on the left). This is a rare variant of an angiosarcoma and considered an intermediate-grade malignancy.

Fascinoma of the Day #2: A liver mass in a 76 year old woman.

Dr. Alfred Lui presented a case of a metastatic pancreatic carcinoma to the liver. It was strikingly positive for CA19-9 and was associated with fibrin thrombi, sometimes associated with metastatic or invasive pancreatic carcinoma.

Journal Article Reviewed-Health Care Fraud and Abuse Laws. Arch Pathol Lab Med 2006;130:1169-1177.

Dr. Paul Shitabata reviewed this recent article, a timely complement to the article reviewed in last week's conference. Co-written by Roger Klein, MD, JD, a comprehensive overview of the anti-kickback safe harbors, Stark Law Exceptions, and the nuances of health care fraud were examined. Excellent reading!
